SIP-based Applications in UMTS: A Performance Analysis
نویسندگان
چکیده
With the ever increasing penetration of IP technologies and the tremendous growth in wireless data traffic, the wireless industry is evolving the mobile core networks towards all IP technology. The 3 Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) is specifying an IP Multimedia Sub-system (IMS) in UMTS Release 5/6, which is adjunct to the UMTS Packet Switched (PS) GPRS CN. This IPbased network will allow mobile operators to provide commonly used Internet applications to wireless user. The UMTS IMS uses the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) defined text-based Session Initiation Protocol (SIP), to control a wide range of anticipated IP-based services offering new services such as multimedia calls, chat, presence services. Initial indications as to the signalling delay associated with SIP messages have concerned operators about the viability of such services over the UMTS air interface. This paper provides an insight into the UMTS system performance, focusing on the UMTS SIP-based service where typical delay-sensitive and non-sensitive applications, such as chat and messaging services are studied. Furthermore we discuss and analyse the requirements and possible solutions for the efficient use of SIP in a wireless environment, such as protocol compression.

متن کاملSIP as a unified signalling solution in a beyond 3G system
The adoption of packet-switched technologies in mobile communication systems has enabled the provision of IPbased services to mobile users. Yet, these systems, such as the UMTS network, are unable to meet the stringent delay requirements imposed by the enhanced multimedia services due to the anchor point that introduce into the user’s data path. Moreover, such applications will rely on IP-based...
متن کاملSIP for Call Control in the 3G IP-based UMTS Core Network
This paper present an example of call control using the Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) for multimedia call management in the “all IP” architecture for the core network of UMTS. The first part of this publication gives an overview of the 3GPP IP-based UMTS core network. The second part introduces an interworking scenario between the UMTS core network and the SIP-enabled public Internet. The c...

In this paper a heterogeneous network model based on the IMS-SIP (session Initiation protocol) with the help of Authentication, Authorization, and Accounting (AAA) protocol that integrates the Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access (WiMAX), Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) and Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) technologies is proposed to improve QoS. The proposed Loos...
متن کاملA new method to support UMTS/WLAN vertical handover using SCTP
This paper proposes a new method to facilitate seamless vertical handover (VHO) between UMTS and WLAN networks using the Stream Control Transmission Protocol (SCTP). The multi-homing capability and dynamic address reconfiguration (DAR) extension of SCTP are applied in a UMTS/WLAN overlay architecture to decrease VHO delay and improve throughput performance. Unlike techniques based on Mobile IP ...
